What is the e-cig?

Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigs as they’re commonly called, have gotten a lot of attention in the news and across the internet.

But like any new invention and new health product, the beginning was a little rough. The “cigarettes” looked more like a medical device than an actual cigarette, not to mention they were a hassle to use.

How to Electronic Cigarettes Work?

Electronic Cigarettes, Demystified, Globally Popularized

Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes, are battery-operated devices that look like real cigarette sticks. Another variety in design and shape is comparable to that of a regular pen. Like actual traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes contain nicotine. This nicotine takes up a liquid form and blended with other ingredients designed to mimic the taste of and experience in smoking tobacco.

To smoke an e-cigarette, you inhale the device; upon doing so an atomizer inside the device converts liquid nitrogen into vapor. You puff this vapor and breathe it out as “smoke.” The whole process is pretty much the same as traditional smoking minus the lighter. It is actually safer in the sense that you will not have to deal with actual flame when going for a nicotine fix. It is safe to assume that e-cigarettes make a good proxy to traditional cigarettes. Chain smokers who have been aiming to quit smoking for a long time might want to try e-cigarettes to personally see the difference that it makes, and how it could potentially change their lifestyle.

Since the e-cigarette is still relatively new in the market, there are manufacturing companies that are offering free trial arrangements with willing testers. Some of the most common observations of those who have tried e-cigarettes is that they don’t feel nicotine-deprived, the act of smoking does not feel different or weird, no tobacco odor comes out of them after a “stick” is done, and that no non-smoking person near them are offended when they smoke. On top of these, it is encouraging to know that you do not run the risk of contracting lung cancer or emphysema upon smoking e-cigarettes. It is like having a nicotine patch without giving up the smoking deed. There are ongoing studies on the effects of smoking cigarettes, but so far, there has been no evidence that shows it could be as harmful as cigarettes. Hence, more and more smoking quitters are turning to it for the transition phase prior to fully quitting smoking.
